Lost & Found Akitas

If you have lost or found an Akita, you should first contact the local animal shelters, humane societies, rescue groups, vet offices, pet stores, dog parks and grooming salons in your area (or the surrounding areas where the Akita was last seen).

If the Akita is not wearing any identification tags, you can try taking the Akita to a vet office, animal shelter or humane society that has a microchip scanner to see if the Akita has a microchip containing his owner's contact information. They also may be able to check if the Akita has any identification stamps or markings on the underside or inside leg region of its body.

You can also place information flyers locally in the area where your Akita was last seen and on the internet
for more coverage.

Akita Brothers found in Rosamond, California
January 18, 2012
Update: Reunited with their owner!

These gorgeous Akita brothers were found on the freeway in Rosamond California in between Bakersfield and Lancaster. They are bonded with each other, friendly but the darker American Akita is a little more reserved than his Japanese brother. They appear to be well cared for, but are not very savvy about traffic. They are both large dogs and had no collars when they were found.

The finder cannot hold them for much longer, so if you are interested in adopting a fantastic Akita pair, please contact Kyle.

Found - Momma Bear and Little Bear in Arroyo Grande, California
November 25, 2011

Hi, I found a mother dog and her puppy about a month ago. I tried to find their home but couldn't. Mom appears to be an Akita Mix that we've named Momma Bear and the female puppy is Little Bear. I can't keep them and am trying to get them a good home.

They are both very sweet and sensitive dogs. The mother is house trained and well behaved. They are very much in need of approval and love. They both have great loving personalities.

If you recognize Momma Bear and Little Bear or are able to give them a new home, please email:
info@tikihutakitarescue.com.

Found - Maggie in Los Angeles
November 18, 2011 - Found a new home!

Hello, this is Maggie.

We found her roaming the streets near Dodger Stadium, dirty and hungry, darting in front of traffic.  Maggie is a 1 1/2-2 year old female Akita mix who weighs about 57 lbs.

We had to follow Maggie for almost an hour, bribing her with treats until she trusted us.  Once we were able to put a leash on her, she magically became a sweet, gentle, docile dog who loves people, other dogs, being petted, walking on a leash, and riding in the car.   We took her to the pound to make sure her owners were not looking for her.  Sadly, they were not, so we bailed her out to put her up for adoption.

Maggie likes other dogs and plays beautifully at the dog park.  She definitely needs someone who can exercise her so she does not become bored and get into trouble.

Maggie has shown zero aggression during the chase to nab her, walking around on a leash, being handled by us, and the trauma of being turned in at the pound.  No growling, no snarling.  She LOVES people so much.  She is always all over me trying to put her head in my lap and snuggle on me.  Very affectionate, loyal, and protecting.  I have done a fair amount of touching/poking/prodding/messing with her, ears/eyes/paws etc. and she does not mind one bit.  i am starting to think she would be very good with children.

She has not been around cats but she does not bother my small chihuahua.  She is very gentle with him.

Maggie is friendly, VERY SMART and trusting of everyone.  She is SO eager to please.  This is helping us immensely with the training we have started.

She knows how to sit, comes to you when called, knows what "NO!" means, knows how to use a doggie door, has not had an accident in the house, and sleeps the whole night in her crate without a peep.  We have begun crate training to ensure that no poor behavior patterns develop, as she has been bounced around a bit in her short life.  She is responding well to the crate.

Also-Maggie is a pretty amazing watchdog!

Maggie is looking for someone with a place in their home and heart for her.  She is fixed, microchipped, up to date on her shots, bathed, had flea medication, had a fecal test done, and is ready to mingle.

Big Guy - Now safe with his family after being lost for over 3 years!

A really beautiful Akita came to my house over two weeks ago. He has a mark on his neck from being chained up and was unkept. There wasn't a microchip or any ID, and no one has claimed him. I've gotten him all his shots, neutered him, had blood work done, microchipped and bathed. He is the sweetest gentle giant imaginable and I love him and want to help him.

He is about 5 years old, 81 pounds, house trained and obeys commands. He is unknown with cats and he appears fine with other dogs, but some dogs don't respond to him well and if provoked, he will growl. He has stayed at the vet and I just took him to a no-kill shelter where they take care of him. I have been visiting him each day at the shelter and was able to get him together with a male black lab. What fun they had! They chased each other all around the yard and both leaped up in the air together and touched paws. They played together twice now for about a 1/2 hour each time. I think he'd be very happy with the right companion. Big Guy is a sweet gentle giant who aims to please. He loves to go for walks and have people company.

Found - Los Angeles, CA
/ Update: Sweetie has found her home!

I'm calling her Sweetie for now, because of her unbelievable sweet and loving disposition. She's about a year old. I found her laying in the middle of a busy intersection in Inglewood, just enjoying the fresh air while cars were swerving around her! I stopped my car at the intersection, went over to her and grabbed her scruff - she happily came with me over to my car. She laid at my feet as we waited for the police to arrive, and all the while was loving my affection! She rolled on her back as if she were mine - never wanted to dart off and was happy to be there with me. When the police arrived, she let them put her in my car with ease. As I drove back home it was if she was thankful to have been picked up - she laid silently and gratefully in the car as I  drove. As I write this she is sleeping contently on the garage floor. She didn't have a chip and I've attempted to find the owner by posting notices around the neighborhood, but I've heard nothing.

Sweetie is about a year old and has an old wound on her left hindleg; a possible fracture or a break at some point but it has healed nicely and has a little bit of scar tissue surrounding it. She walks, plays and runs just like a normal dog. She was spayed/microchipped and had all of her shots on September 30th. She has such sweet eyes and an amazingly peaceful temperament but is still a puppy and needs training. We've already taught her how to sit. A must for any dog lover.

Molly - Lost in Aptos, California
January 29, 2010

Lost Beautiful grey Akita - Flume Road, Aptos, California
Date: 2010-01-29

Hi... we just lost our beautiful 9 year old, 80 pound, female Akita.

'Molly' was with us on the trail at the top of Flume Road when we decided to let her off the leash for just a second... well she got excited and ran a little too far away and then freaked and got lost. Molly is a complete house dog and is probably freaking out right now. She looks scary but loves people... she'll come to a female calling her. She is a little afraid of men.

She is grayish white, kinda wolfish with real tall legs. She is wearing a purple collar with our phone number on it (702-496-1976).

Thanks so much,

Marty and Laurie

Bay is a 9-year old, female Akita that wandered away from her home in Berkeley, California on December 14, 2009. She is very friendly to people, but somewhat aggressive to animals, particularly female dogs. She has white socks on her feet/legs in front and is otherwise brown and white with black ears and nose (with some gray). Her right knee just went out and is scheduled to be fixed next month, so she limps when she walks.
