Karma

Karma was adopted from us 8 months ago as a puppy. Unfortunately, her guardian unexpectedly became very ill and was no longer able to care for her. We need to find the right home for her, where someone can provide the attention and life she deserves.

Karma is approximately 10 months old and still a pup, though like many female Akitas is already quite the mature and regal young lady! Karma lights up at the prospect of a much coveted walk! And she still has plenty of energy, so a good brisk jaunt a couple of times a day helps provide her with quality exercise and a good dose of sunshine!

Karma also loves to get in the car and go for a ride! She knows a good adventure when she sees it, and is a willing passenger!

This youngster will need to be enrolled in a basic obedience class. Though she is extremely intelligent and knows her basic commands and then some, she’ll need a refresher course. She also needs to be shown that you are capable of providing consistent, ongoing leadership which she can come to rely on.

Karma is a gorgeous girl on the outside with a silvery undercoat with a glossy black overlay which glistens when she’s out taking in the sun. The dark, rich color adds to her already ever present aura of intrigue! She’s a beauty inside as well. She is affectionate, loving, independent, intelligent, secure in her fur and self assured. She is housetrained, is fabulous on leash, and likes other big dogs. No cats or small animals/dogs, however.

We want the best for our girl, and the next home for her needs to be her forever home. They say the eyes are the window to the soul. If you look in Karma’s eyes, you cannot help but be mesmerized by her beautiful spirit.

If you can provide Karma with the secure and stable homelife she deserves, please email Diane at:

Kapono

Kapono is a Hawaiian expression meaning “Righteous One”, and in more modern day terms is also construed as “Goodness”.

At approximately 7 months old, little Kapono exemplifies righteousness and all that is good in life. He is pure in everything he does and takes a wide eyed approach to all his endeavors! He wants nothing more than to touch you with his big paws and be close, so he can infect you with his wonderful spirit. He bears all there is to see and know about him, and wears his heart on his paws, for everyone to see.

He loves everyone, as is evident when he comes clumsily bounding toward you just as fast as his legs can carry him, with ears flopping! Once he reaches you, he wags his entire body so enthusiastically, swinging his rear back and forth from side to side, that his tail nearly touches his nose. He’ll look up at you with wide, adoring amber eyes, with an innocence and purity all his own.

Kapono is an intelligent boy who is quickly learning his basic commands. He’s at a very critical developmental stage in life and will need someone that can be his guide in life. As with all youngsters, he’ll need someone that understands the commitment required to ensure he continues down this path. Time and dedication to properly raise a puppy does not come easily. Be sure you are realistic about your ability to give it your full attention and commitment. We cannot place him in a home where he will be home alone for 8-10 hours a day. We prefer someone that works from home, works part time or can take him to work. He currently accompanies me to my office several days a week and settles right in to the routine. Kapono is crate trained, and housetrained.

Kapono is neutered and current on his vaccinations. He will need to be enrolled in a basic obedience class so he can continue to learn those valuable communication skills that will help him become a well rounded adult. He’s quite the social butterfly and has never met a stranger!

Kapono has a gorgeous, vibrant red/fawn coat, 3 white feet, 1 white sock and a black mask. His mom is a beautiful purebred Akita and as they say, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, because it’s obvious where Kapono got all his sweetness from. We’re not sure what dad was (perhaps Shepherd), so you might say Kapono is a true “Poi Dog”!!

No cats for Kapono, as he finds them too exciting, however he does love to play with the big dogs.

When you are with Kapono, he will make you feel as if you are the only person in this world that matters. He should be made to feel the same way.

If you can give Kapono the commitment he needs, please email:

Tyler (aka Baron) - Adopted!

UPDATE: 5/5/08 - ADOPTED!!

Tyler is a dog that wants nothing more than to be loved and show love in return. His beautiful markings showcase the handsome mixture of his heritage, which we think is Akita and Siberian Husky.

Tyler is a small framed young boy, less than 2 years old. It seems some of the things we might take for granted, are new to him, such as living indoors, car rides, etc. At first he would panic at the idea of getting in the car, and would splay out his legs trying to brace himself. But true to both of his breeds, he’s a very intelligent soul. After a couple of car rides to some great places, he learned the car was a good place to be. Now he can hardly wait to leap into the back of my car.

Show him anything new a couple of times and he’ll master it immediately. He’s also very affectionate and loving. A trainer that is working with him summed it up best. She said, “If he could crawl inside your pocket, he would”. Tyler is mostly interested in his humans and his toys. If that’s all he had in life, he would be one happy camper. Unfortunately right now, he only has his toys. He’s missing having a human companion by his side.

Tyler wants desperately to bond with his special person, and having that void in his life is heartbreaking to see.

Due to a shortage of foster homes, we are having to board him at a nearby kennel. Unfortunately, he’s not doing well in the kennel and is beginning to lose weight. We need to get him out of there as quickly as possible, so he can begin his new life.

Tyler is a sensitive, intuitive boy. The Sibe in him requires a fair amount of quality exercise, ie: some long walks, a jog, and some mental stimulation in the way of a basic obedience class, and perhaps even an agility class for fun. Once he’s had a chance to have a great mental and physical work out, I think he’ll settle at your feet for the evening. This boy is longing for his person, and we don’t want to deny him of that any longer.

Though we think he’s part Akita, he tends to be more Husky-like in his demeanor. He’s active, and loves to get out and run. He may do ok with another dog as long as it’s a female and slow, proper introductions are done. It’s unknown at this time how he would react to cats.

Tyler would probably do best in a home where someone isn’t gone for 8-10 hours a day, but perhaps with someone that works from home or works part time, etc. Siberians can be notorious for being escape artists. We don’t know if he can jump a fence, so would caution anyone interested in him to have a secure yard.

Tyler is learning some basic obedience commands, as it appears as though no one bothered to teach him in his previous life. He’s learned quite a bit in a short period of time, but would benefit from and probably love a basic obedience class. He pulls a bit on leash and is very strong, but once the initial excitement of going on the walk has subsided, he walks fairly calmly. He is exuberant about taking toys from your hand so he’s learning the “drop” command, but he takes treats ever so gently from you, barely touching your fingers with his mouth.

Tyler does not need an overly firm hand. He can be sensitive and things are still new to him. He needs someone with patience that is just as eager to show him the world as he is to see it. He wants someone that will patiently help him catch up on so many of the things he’s obviously missed out on in life. We don’t think he’s lived indoors so would probably need to learn the house rules and house manners.

Please email us if you’re interested in meeting Tyler. We desperately need to get him out of the kennel.

Tye is neutered, chipped and current on vaccinations. Anyone that adopts him should continue his training and obedience work by enrolling him in a class.

Anjou

Anjou is a beautiful, three-year old, female Akita that is looking for her new home and family. She was given up to the local animal shelter by her family when they could no longer care for her, but we were able to get her out of the shelter before she was to be euthanized.

She has a friendly personality that is highlighted with her bursts of playfulness and solicitations for attention. She appears to prefer the company of other dogs that will play with her, but may be okay in the right home as the only dog that gets lots of attention.

Anjou is housetrained and up to date for her vaccinations. She walks very well on lead and has some basic obedience skills (sit, down, give paw). Like most Akitas, she is very clean but can make a bit of a mess when she is engaged in her favorite activity - playing with her stuffed squeeky toys and removing the squeekers and stuffing material!

For more information about Anjou, please send all email correspondence to: pochacco778 @ yahoo .com

Arita

Tora Amai (Sweet Tiger)
Registered name:  Crazy’s Paradise Tora Amai
Call name:  Tora Amai (Tora) aka Arita
Birthdate:  September 29, 2004

A most unique Akita, Tora is a purebred Brazilian Japanese Akita who has the quality of an untamed spirit. Feral and wild in appearance, her personality would appeal to those who are fascinated by wolves and their superior intelligence. Look deep into her eyes and you will see a predatory alertness reminiscent of an exotic wild animal.

Tora is not the dog for everyone, and anyone considering adoption should be able to stay one step ahead of her: be mentally sharp, firm and disciplined.  This is not a dog you can leave at home to sleep the day away, Tora needs intelligent stimulation to remain occupied. Due to her unusual life experiences, Tora’s “people reading skills” are extremely accurate, and she has learned to manipulate people to serve her needs. She can exhibit problem solving capabilities not typically seen in canines.  Tora has also learned that with most people, to keep from being left unattended and bored, persistent “screaming” will get her way as people will eventually give in, and she has the patience to wait you out. And yet, if she is happily occupied, you may never hear her scream.

Charming with an infectious sense of humor when it suits her, Tora is extremely loyal and affectionate to those who have earned her respect. Although never put to the test, we have no doubt that Tora would stand by your side to protect if she felt it necessary. She bonds very deeply, gazing at you with complete adoration, watching your every move.  Content to linger the day with you, she also loves to play with her toys and is quite entertaining to watch as she throws her toys high in the air, only to catch them with exact precision. A very regal and dignified Akita, Tora greets newcomers with charm and grace, dividing her time so that everyone receives her special attention. Most people who spend time with her soon fall under her spell, as she is playfully affectionate but can also be quite the prankster!

Tora must be the only dog in the household, as she likes things orderly and has a very low tolerance for dogs that misbehave or do not follow commands. Of course, her rules about orderly conduct only apply to other dogs!

For more information about Tora, please send all email correspondence to:  info @ tikihutakitarescue.com

Mihari - Adopted!

From Rags to Riches

Mihari is the reality version of the Rags to Riches story - Once homeless with moth-eaten fur, Mihari now sports a brand new fur coat, rich with luster and depth. Her bald patches have filled in due to love, care and a good diet. She’s lost the constant worried expression and the deep furrows that were so much a part of her makeup, replaced by a happier, serene look as she relaxes, contemplating her new life. Mihari still holds habits from her past, shyness setting in when she is in unfamiliar territory with strangers, but she warms up very fast.

Mihari is not the perfect dog, as she feels that rules are made to be broken. Not the most attentive student, Mihari can disrupt obedience lessons by prancing around, play bowing to manipulate her trainers into playing. She is the essential party dog, cutting class at any opportunity to engage in fun. In her home environment where she feels safe and comfortable, Mihari is quite the prankster. Looking for any opportunity to have a good time, she will take your possessions and hide them from you, watching to see if you can catch her. Wanting to share her curiosity, Mihari is also the special Akita who likes to take your wrist or clothing gently and lead you to something she finds interesting.

Mihari had a very difficult start with motherhood, but now that she has recovered, she is an overgrown pup. Not having led a normal life filled with joy, she has learned how to play from watching her puppies interact with strangers, watching their reactions and absorbing the happiness in her surroundings. Everyone involved took baby steps to engage her participation and once the dam broke, her playfulness overflowed. So much in fact, that her number one priority became playtime.

A convicted “butt biter”, Mihari has learned that when those people she loves bend over, it is the ultimate opportunity to strike a reaction by nipping their rear. For Mihari, this is one action where the reward surpasses any discipline she may receive. In fact, if she thinks you may be ready to bend over, you can see her poised, ready to launch herself at your unguarded backside.  Biking pants may help, but if you aren’t aware of your actions, you may feel a pinch! Most have found this a loving, highly entertaining quality causing much laughter, thus being the reason it has been so difficult to break this action. Mihari is one of the most playful Akitas we have seen, with an outstanding sense of humor. Highly engaging, when told to “go to bed”, she will suddenly dart off to create chaos by barking in the resident grumpy dog’s face, then zoom to beat you to the punch by standing by her bed with a smiling face as if to say “I’m a good girl. Here I am by my bed!”

Mihari is a mini-Akita, small in size but big in personality. Housebroken, crate trained and non-destructive, she has a gentle, affectionate personality that comes to life when she wants to PLAY! This is one special girl, that will always hold a very special place in our hearts.

For more information about Mehari or if you would like to meet her, please send email to: info @ tikihutakitarescue.com

Buster

UPDATE: JANUARY, 2008

Buster has been waiting so patiently for his forever home. We don't understand why he's still in rescue except perhaps his eye condition, which recent exams have shown there to be no further degeneration!! When the sun shines in his eyes, he sometimes doesn't see very well, but this boy can catch kibble in mid-air and will spot a cat a mile away! Apparently he has no problem seeing the important things!! NO CATS PLEASE!

After seeing Buster in action, playing and having such a ball with his foster roomies, we feel it 's in his best interest if he only go to a home with a resident female dog. We will not place him in a home where he will be the only dog. He's highly social with other canines, and truly loves their companionship.

Other than that, he remains as sweet as can be with his people. He is a great running partner and loves to get out and see the world. He'll need someone that is active and social, but not necessarily constantly on the go, as he likes to be a couch potato as well! What more could you want in a best friend?

Buster
is a handsome longcoated Akita boy who is friendly with everyone he meets!  He's estimated at about 1 year old.  He has a beautiful flowing mane and one of the sweetest temperaments we've seen!  He was turned into the shelter as a stray. The shelter was scheduled to close in two hours when we were told how wonderful he was. After the close of business that night, he was slated to be euthanized the following morning. Due to the help of the rescue coordinator at the shelter, we were able to get him a reprieve and rescue him.

We think Buster may have some Siberian Husky in him, stemming way back in his past, due to his blue eyes, however he is all Akita in every other way....well, in many ways! As he gets along wonderfully with other dogs and is currently being fostered with another male Akita as well as a female Akita. He is shown in the picture with his best buddy, Koi (the sliver and black brindle).

This youngster is just that...a youngster. He will need some basic obedience training as all adolescent dogs do, and would really enjoy being in an active household.  He would love to get out and see the world with you, and would benefit from a regular exercise routine. His eyes have been examined by a specialist, and he was diagnosed with juvenile cataracts. He sees fine, however his condition should be monitored as there's a chance it can worsen, while there's also the chance it will remain unchanged. A full report is available from his exam.

Because our teenager loves to be with his people, he's best suited for a home where someone can spend time working with him.  He's still very much a puppy at heart and tends to get bored when left alone, and looks for things to do to keep himself occupied!! With the right guardian that can teach him the joys of a Kong and other intellectually stimulating toys, he can learn to pass the time when left alone.
Buster is learning crate training, and this should be continued in his new home so he can benefit from the consistency. This youngster just needs some guidance and someone experienced with raising a young dog.

Buster has proven to be a huge love with everyone he meets and we would like nothing more than for him to go to a home with someone that has the time for a young dog that's eager to learn and explore!

If you're interested in adopting
Buster, please email Diane at:  adopt1 @ sbcglobal. net

Diamond

Diamond is a beautiful, calm, petite female Akita who is fine with most dogs, but will only be rehomed to a household with a male dog. She was turned in to the shelter due to family problems, and is obviously sad and confused to be away from all that is familiar. The shelter has her listed as 10 years old, but we are not convinced as she does not appear to be that old. She does seem a bit depressed and sad, as she is obviously in discomfort with some type of allergic reaction on her hind legs. The shelter thinks this may be due to a flea allergy.

Involved in rescue, we meet many dogs that tug at our hearts needing homes, but every once in awhile we run across one that affects our heart and mind so much, it is difficult to walk away and leave them there. Diamond is one of those special Akitas. Diamond’s soft eyes PLEAD with you to take her away from the shelter, and into a nice, warm, loving home. As you approach her kennel, she runs up to greet you, eyes sparkling, hoping that you will be the one to take her away from this life. After some time passes, sadly, she seems resigned that this is her fate and will step back letting her canine roommate crowd the front of the cage. By looking at her, you can see Diamond’s soft, sweet nature shine through. Look past the red irritation and hair loss on her hind legs, the need for a bath – look into her soulful eyes and see the beautiful Akita that she could be, given the chance.

Kuma is a 5 year old, 115 lb. gorgeous brindle and white neutered male Akita, who is losing his home very soon. His owner is heartbroken at losing his home and friend, and has been desperately looking to find someone who will give this sensitive Akita the care and home he deserves, without being intimidated by his size. Although a large Akita, Kuma is a gentle, quiet, giant teddy bear who has a loving personality, seeking attention and affection from family members.

Abigail

Would be perfect only pet. Abigail is the most faithful seven-year old, chocolate Lab you will ever find.

Good at obedience skills, great walker and in excellent health. You would never know that this girl is seven years old. She hops, jumps, runs and plays fetch like a puppy. Her mature side also makes her just as easy to settle on her pillow in the house. She is completely housebroken and ready to enjoy.

So why is she on the bad dog list? It had something to do with the family cat. Apparently there was an incident and the cat didn’t make it. In my opinion not a good reason to throw away a loving dog that you have had for 7 years; but, I wasn’t the one that abandoned her.

She also does not like to be bothered by other dogs. She is OK with them being around and she will ignore them when she is out for a walk, but she draws the line at them getting in her face. She has not had any real fights but will not hesitate to give them a snap on the nose if they irritate her. She lived with another dog in her last home so we are not sure why she has developed this habit. My guess is she was raised with the other dog and therefore was used to it, but she was not properly socialized with dogs outside the home.

Abigail would do well as a companion for an older person without other pets in the house or a family without small children (below age 8). She was never in a home with small children so we do not know if she is trustworthy.

PROFILE:
Owner/Handler: Any skill level or older companion.
Children: Over 8 years of age
Other Pets in Home: No cats or other dogs.
Exercise Level: Moderate
Housebroken: Yes
Obedience Trained: Yes
Dog Parks: No
Other: Never gets tired of being petted. Will run into a burning building for a
dog cookie!

Not good with other pets!

Kuma

Kuma is a great guy. He is a big, exuberant, four year old dog that loves everyperson he meets. He is okay with other dogs as long as he has time to get to know them, and they are fairly submissive. He thinks he's much smaller than he is and loves to cuddle. His coat is thick and beautiful. He is very healthy and before he is adopted we will make sure that he is up to date on shots and neutered. He could stand to lose a little weight, but proper exercise should fix that quickly.

If anyone would like more information about Kuma they can contact Lexi at: lexi.williamson@yahoo.com.

Yuki (San Francisco, CA)

Our Yuki has been through a lot in her life. A 5-6 year old female Akita who weighs 80 pounds, she was found on the streets and had probably been used for breeding purposes. We think she has had several litters. When she was spayed she was also surgically treated for cancer. She is now doing very well but will need future checkups to monitor for cancer. The only medicines she needs are eye drops twice daily.

Yuki loves to play and go for short walks. She has a slightly enlarged heart so heavy exercise is not recommended. With a little time and slow introductions she can get used to other dogs. She might be too interested in very small animals and needs watching if around them. She would do best in a home where she is the only dog and will have someone there for company a good part of the day. Yard access during the day so she can go out when she wants would help her to stay healthy and happy. Yuki is very sweet and will make a good companion. We are hoping to find that special person who will understand the breed and give her the love and care she deserves. Previous Akita experience required.

If you are interested in adopting Yuki, please complete our online adoption application which can be found on our website: www.gratefuldogsrescue.org

One of our volunteers will get back to you. Adoptions are local, confined to the San Francisco Bay Area.
