SHAKA - COMING SOON!!

Meet Shaka!

Shaka
is a Hawaiian gesture that has many meanings, including the more loosely known “hang loose” translation. However to the native Hawaiians, it also symbolizes the personification of leading a Hawaiian lifestyle of aloha (love).

Shaka is new to our program, so we are still learning about him. However what we know so far is that whoever gave him up…well it’s their loss and our gain.

Shaka seems to leave behind him a path of aloha spirit everywhere he goes. He loves everyone he has come into contact with in the short time he’s been with us, and draws the admiration of everyone who meets him, young and old alike. Very much like a young pup still, he has a sense of humor and reckless abandon, at the same time he’s loving and affectionate. He has a very generous and giving heart, and will bond extremely quickly and very tightly with his new guardian. He wants nothing out of life except to give and receive affection and share his larger-than-life aloha spirit with that special someone.

One of his favorite things to do is roll in the grass on his back, kicking all four feet in the air exposing his belly to you. Hint, hint….a tummy rub would be nice! While you rub his tummy, he looks up at you upside down on his back, with the softest brown eyes that seem to say, “don’t ever let this moment end”.

Shaka is a gorgeous red brindle who is approx. 2 ½-3 years old. Originally the shelter thought he was older, but upon reexamination, it was evident he is much younger. He is quite underweight and will need to put on about another 15 lbs. Once he fills out and grows into his head and paws, he will be an impressive, and stunning boy. He’s very strong, but walks beautifully with a gentle leader. He’s a smart boy that only needs to be shown something once. His one fault is that in his excitement to see you, he jumps up, which we are working on. Once he’s leashed up and ready to hit the road, he gets his groove on and just goes with the flow. After some quality exercise, he is calm and will happily lie by your feet, relishing in the nearness of you. He can be somewhat sensitive to a raised voice, but not overly so, however a gentle hand and consistency will reward you tenfold.

He knows how to sit and shake hands, but will need to go to a basic obedience class with his new person, so he can complete his repertoire. He will love the challenge of being able to use his intellect, which we feel he hasn’t been challenged to do. He’s just waiting for the chance to show what he’s got!

He rides fabulously in the car and enjoys any adventure that lies ahead.

He’s been tested with a female Siberian mix, and they played very nicely together. He would probably be ok with the right female companion of the canine persuasion.

We don’t know if he is housetrained so he may require a lesson or two and the use of a doggy door would be helpful. No kids due to his jumping habit and large size.

From what we can gather at this point, we think Shaka’s ideal home would be with someone who is active, likes the outdoors, and has a somewhat flexible schedule.

As we get to know him better, we’ll update this page. Please check back, for more information.

Though he's not quite ready to go to his new home, but will be soon, we are accepting applications at this time. For more information about our adoption process, fees, procedures, and for our application, please click here: adoption application.

If you have questions about Shaka, please email Diane at: adopt1 @ sbcglobal. net (remove spaces).

She may not be able to share a home with certain types of dogs or also a home with small dogs or cats.

Tsuki (fostered in Southern California)

Coming Soon!

Tsuki is an 8 week old Akita baby, probably mixed with something else, but at this age, it's anyone's guess as to what her breed mix is!

Tsuki was being fostered for one of the shelters, where she was to be returned, to be placed up for adoption. However her savvy foster mom detected her dominant, alpha nature, and knew she would be better off placed by us, into an Akita experienced home.

Yes, even at this age, her very strong personality and bossy behavior is very evident! She just came into our program so she's not available for adoption just yet. She's now in foster care boot camp, learning how to socialize with other dogs, cats and children. She's also learning how to understand that her place in the pack is not in the leadership role.

As we get to know more about her, we'll post updates. We can tell however, that she will need a very Akita savvy home with a great deal of experience with the breed and/or other similar northern breeds with similar traits. She will also need someone to care for her that is home a good part of the day, since she should not be left alone for long periods of time at this age.

To no surprise, Tsuki has proved to be one smart cookie. Thanks to her original foster mom, she's already crate trained and knows how to let you know when she has to "go potty". She also has been taught to come to a whistle!

Though she's not available quite yet, we are accepting and considering applications.

Please click here for our application:  adoption application

**** Please note, Tsuki is being fostered in Southern California ****

Charli

Charli is a well-mannered 3 year old, recovering pampered princess. Given the freedom to make her own decisions, this stubborn, dominant, big boned girl can go into takeover mode with selective hearing. That said, with firm guidance and an experienced Akita guardian, we think she can become the compliant companion she once was.

Charli is housebroken and has had some training, however would prefer not to follow instructions unless she thinks there’s a good reason to. She's very friendly with people and does not hesitate to show affection. If you’re seeking the typical aloof, guarding type, she probably isn’t the one for you. She loves to give and receive affection, but can be very particular about other dogs. It’s possible with proper introductions and the right match, Charli might enjoy living in a two dog household, as she loves to play. Like many Akitas her play style is rough, and she has been known to body slam other dogs. Charli also enjoys playing with toys, but tends to get so involved that it takes a bit of work to break her focus on the toy at hand.

Charli’s adopter will have had previous experience with multiple Akitas of varying temperaments. She is not the dog for the individual who has limited experience with the breed.

It will also be a condition of her adoption that she be enrolled in a basic obedience class, within the first month of adoption. Life changes in her former home created an environment where Charli was left to do as she pleased without boundaries or structure. Nothing was asked or required of her, so like most dogs she decided that life was all about fun and games without rules. Though it sounds like the perfect situation for any dog, Akitas thrive on strong, reliable leadership.

A successful transition will require that her new guardian gently take the reins from her and implement a strict regimen, so Charli can relinquish the burden of being her own pack leader. Charli needs and desires someone who can provide guidance for her, so she knows what is expected of her.

If you are Akita savvy, and interested in this beautiful girl who needs someone to show her the ropes again, please email us at:

Tomo - Adopted!

Tomo's story is that his previous owner dropped him off at his vet's office, but never came back to take him home. Fortunately, the caring staff at the vet's office was able to contact TARA about him. Tomo was originally in an awful, neglected physical state and health, but after months of proper care and being fed good food regularly, he is the happy, handsome boy you see now!

Please send email to
info@tikihutakitarescue.com for more information about Tomo or if you would like to give him a new home!

Yoshi
- Adopted!

Yoshi came into the TARA foster care program after his previous owners tied him to the fence at the animal shelter one night (he was too large to squeeze into one of the drop off boxes) and just left him there.

Yoshi is a very handsome and large, white, male Akita that has soft fur that makes him feel like a plush teddy bear when you pet him, which can be fairly often as he enjoys being petted and getting tummy rubs. He is estimated to be about seven-years old, but he can be playful and active like an adolescent or just a mellow dog that is content to lay by your side. His favorite daily activity is going on walks.

Yoshi is healthy, up to date on his vaccinations and been given a full checkup by our vet. He has exhibited some indications of arthritis (a bit slow in getting up), but that doesn't stop him from going on his daily walks or trotting around the yard with his foster brothers. He is currently receiving supplements for helping with his knees and hips, but may require surgery later on as he gets older.

Once Yoshi gets to know you, he bonds closely, is very attentive and follows you around to make sure you're nearby. Yoshi is house trained, walks fairly well on lead and knows some of his basic obedience skills. He's receptive to meeting people and well behaved children and likes the attention that he receives while in public. He has shown interest in small animals, dogs and cats and may be able to share a home with another female dog.

Sachi

How many ways can you say "perfect?" Sachi, SAchi, SAChi, SACHi, SACHI. SACHI, SACHI, SACHI!

Sachi became a Norsled dog because she was kenneled at a local shelter with a young, scaredy-boy Husky whom she was mothering and keeping company, a role she was well-suited for due to recently having had her own puppies. Because any Husky lover is automatically an honorary Norsled member and because Sachi was so darn sweet and in need of rescue, Norsled's Rescue and Adoption Coordinator didn't give a moment's thought about leaving her behind.

Sachi is housetrained, sleeps all night in her own bed, quiet, fun and playful when invited, not clingy, annoying or bothersome. She is comfortable with herself and where ever she goes. Truly delightful company. Nice with other dogs (small and large) and cats. As perfect as any dog could be.

OK, she has one flaw: she is mouthy when she plays.

Sachi, which means "girl child of bliss," is precisely that. She's 1.5 to 2 years old, approximately 15lbs. Will be spayed, vaccinated, heartworm tested prior to adoption.

Please email rescue@norsled.org for more information about this little gem.

Ridge - Delano, CA - VERY URGENT! OUT OF TIME!

HURRY PLEASE! RIDGE IS OUT OF TIME AT THE SHELTER!

Hi, my name is Ridge. I am a 1-1/2 year old Akita Mix. My mother is an Akita and my father was not. I really like people and will give everyone a big old bear hug. I'm not fond of other dogs though. I missed out on good early training, so will need some help in that area. I am hoping to find a home with someone who can teach me everything I did not learn when I was younger. Please save me.

Ridge's adoption fee is $10.00 plus the cost for his neuter surgery. If you are interested please contact us right away. Email messages are checked daily. Phone messages do not get checked every day, so it is faster to send email. Due to lack of space, time is limited for dogs at a public shelter. There is a play area at the shelter for you to get to know the dogs and for them to get to know you. They all deserve a good home.

For information on how to adopt Ridge, please contact

Kylie - South Lake Tahoe, CA - ADOPTED!

ADOPTED!
Kylie's situation is URGENT.
Kylie is a 5-1/2 year old female long coated Akita. She's spayed, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm tested and in excellent health. She is a loving and affectionate girl.

Here's what her owners say about her:

"Kylie is a beautifully marked dog, who wants only to be close to humans and be loved. She loves to be walked and play ball. I have had shoulder surgery and have taught her very quickly the word "Easy" when we are walking her. She knows when I am at the other end of the leash and not my husband, because as soon as I say "Easy" she stops in her tracks and turns to wait for me to say "OK".

Kylie wouldn't have a problem with children who know how to treat animals and I think if introduced properly to other dogs more her size she would be fine. I really believe her problem with my dog is that she is jealous.

I would like to see someone take Kylie that needs loving companionship, because she will fulfill your every need. She needs attention and exercise. Initially, she will have to be kenneled when not being exercised or played with until she gets used to you. Once she knows she is loved and cared for she is fine.

I also think she would make a really good house dog, if you own your own house and aren't too picky about keeping it clean as everything sticks to their coats and when the weather is bad they do track in a lot of mud."

There will be a $150.00 adoption fee.

If you are interested in Kylie, please contact

Sasha - Las Vegas, NV

Sasha is a stunning pinto girl who has been waiting so long for her forever home, that she thinks the shelter IS her home. How sad that she hasn’t been given the chance yet to know what a real home is.

She is very affectionate towards humans and appears to have a strong bond with women. She has a real enthusiasm for life, which is evident when she’s let free in the exercise run. Free from the small quarters of her kennel space, she can let her hair down and stretch her legs. This beautiful girl is in the back of the shelter where adopters can’t see her. A wonderful and gorgeous Akita like this should be out front where people can see how lovely she is. As long as she’s hidden in the back, her chances of ever finding a home are slim to none.

Sasha was probably kept outdoors all her life, and will need someone who can be patient when teaching her house manners. No one’s ever bothered to explain it to her, but she’s a quick study and is eager to please. We think she can adapt quickly if given the chance.

Sasha needs to be the only dog in the home, and will not be a good fit for a family with cats. Being an only dog will afford her adequate attention and the love she deserves. Any dog with an unknown history with children, is better in an adults only home. This girl needs her family to focus and concentrate on her, without all those added distractions. After all, hasn’t she waited long enough for that privilege?

Sasha is approximately seven years old, but she’s quite spry and has a full life ahead of her.

If you have experience with large dogs, are patient and loving, and can provide the lifestyle and home environment she needs, you will be rewarded tenfold. We guarantee it.

Foster - Anaheim, CA - ADOPTED!!

This little boy's name is Foster. He was rescued from a Riverside Co. Animal Shelter in May and is about 4 months old now. He is an Akita mix (probably with Lab) so he will probably be a large boy – 60 – 80 lbs. He is in a foster home in Anaheim with his foster mom, dad, a foster sister Pita (female Akita) and a big foster brother Boomer (male Great Pyrenees). He is a typical puppy – full of fun and very lovable! He is learning how to walk on a leash and rides well in a car. He loves playing with Pita and is trying not to get on Boomer’s nerves… he’s also had to learn not to test those sharp puppy teeth on fingers and toes, so he will need lots of chew toys. He is housebroken, up to date on shots, and will be neutered and micro-chipped prior to placement.

Foster is being cared for in Anaheim, California.

For more details about him, please contact:

Tarzan - Adopted!

We have a handsome boy at our shelter currently available for adoption. He was a stray already neutered but no microchip or tags. Seems extremely social, people and dog friendly. Here is his description:

Tarzan is a big ol’ bear of a dog, and loves to have his ears scratched and rubbed. He is friendly and confident, and seems to get along well with other dogs. Tarzan can pull pretty strong on a leash, and since there is just so much of him, he should be enrolled in a basic training class to learn appropriate leash manners. Tarzan should not live with smaller children or cats, and should go to a home with lots of dog experience.

By the way, he is a 100 pound,  4 to 5 year old, male Akita, current on vaccines and heartworm negative. Nice dog!

Kita

Kita is a 4-year old, white & brindle, neutered, male Akita Mix. He is house-trained and microchipped. We took him in for an acquaintance when her living situation changed. It was supposed to be a temporary arrangement but her siltation remained the same and she cannot take him back.

He's a very sweet dog, very friendly with women and children over four, can be shy around men and toddlers but he warms up pretty quickly. He's a very playful dog and loves being outside with his family, taking long walks and hiking.  He's not much for fetching balls or Frisbees but loves a good game of chase around the backyard.

He gets along great with most kids. We have a 4-year old and he does fine with her, plus he loves all the attention he gets when we take him to the park with us. He tends to avoid children who are really noisy and hyper.

He is aggressive with other dogs and I would exercise caution giving in him to a family who already has dogs, especially if they're small. He has lived with other dogs before and seems to tolerate dogs he is familiar with, but he will try to bite if they sniff him. He's never lived with cats but tries to chase them if he sees one while we're on a walk.

We feed him Innova Adult dry dog food. He especially loves it when we mix it with Innova or Trader Joe's canned dog food. He typically will eat two half-bowls a day.

He's very much a family dog and prefers to be wherever his people are. He only sleeps inside. He knows "sit", "down" and "stay" and we're currently working on "stay" when he gets really excited. He had really bad separation anxiety when we first took him in but has come a long way, no longer chewing when we leave or having to follow me everywhere.

If you are able to give Kita a new home, please contact Kristin at

Abigail - ADOPTED!!!  YEAH!!

Abigail is the most faithful seven-year old, chocolate Lab you will ever find, and is the perfect pet if you have no other animals. Fostered by a professional trainer, she is good at obedience skills, a great walker and in excellent health. You would never know that this girl is seven years old. She hops, jumps, runs and plays fetch like a puppy. Her mature side also makes her just as easy to settle on her pillow in the house. She is fully housebroken, crate trained and ready to enjoy.

Abigail’s family gave her up after 7 years, because she preferred the company of people rather than animals. She is fine with dogs walking by and will basically ignore them when she is out on a walk, but she draws the line at them getting in her face. She has not had any real fights but will not hesitate to give them a snap on the nose if they irritate her. She lived with another dog in her last home so we are not sure why she has developed this habit. Our guess is she was raised with the other dog and therefore was used to it, but she was not properly socialized with dogs outside the home.

Abigail would do well as a companion for anyone wanting an obediently trained, low maintenance dog to join their family. Abigail will be adopted out only to homes with no other pets, and any children must be over 8 years old, as Abigail has never had exposure to small children. We feel that Abigail should not have to compete for attention with small children in a household, as she deserves to have some quality time focused on her alone. This girl never gets tired of being petted, and is so food motivated that she would run into a burning building for a cookie!
