TikiHut Akita Rescue

Kinako

This sweet and lovable girl is the perfect companion for an adult-only household. She is always thrilled to greet you and uses her mouth to gently say, “Hello!” or “Please pet me and give me love”. Though Kinako only has one eye, she doesn’t miss a beat and uses her other keen senses to make up for her slight disability. She is very loyal and attentive and loves to be close to her family.

At about 5 years of age, Kinako is the perfect age for someone that doesn’t want to deal with raising a puppy, but wants a vivacious dog. She's active, playful and energetic. If you provide a solid foundation of leadership, quality exercise and mental stimulation, you will be rewarded with a well balanced companion. Kinako would be a great addition to a home with someone with previous Akita experience and knows what it takes to guide and lead them with a firm, yet gentle hand.

Kinako can be particular about other dogs, so slow, gradual introductions may be needed if you already have a resident dog. She is currently sharing her foster home with two other dogs, but is not a good candidate for homes with small dogs or cats.

If you are interested in Kinako, please email your completed adoption application to info@tikihutakitarescue.com. You can obtain an application from our website at www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting/cfm

Tony in Sierra Madre (near Pasadena), California

Hi. I rescued an Akita/German Shepherd mix from being euthanized in October. His name is Tony, he was a stray and is approximately 8 or so years old. He loves walks, cookies and needs simple training and attention. He is constantly by my side. His ears were eaten by flies and the fur has grown back nicely. He has had a rough life and learns quickly but I have cats and he is not a good mix with them. He has been neutered and has had his shots.

Tony would have been an ideal companion for me but he is better suited for a cat free home, probably without children. He likes other dogs, but is used to being hungry so he is in a mad rush when it comes time to eat. He takes cookies very gently and does not pull on the leash during walks. He is a typical Akita that needs a firm but gentle hand. As I said, he is with me constantly while I am home. He was not cared for prior to living with me and he deserves a great home to retire in.

For more information about Tony and to meet him, please email edynllc@gmail.com

Momma Bear and Little Bear

Hi, I found a mother dog and her puppy about a month ago. I tried to find their home but couldn't. Mom appears to be an Akita Mix that we've named Momma Bear and the female puppy is Little Bear. I can't keep them and am trying to get them a good home. They are both very sweet and sensitive dogs. The mother is house trained and well behaved. They are very much in need of approval and love. They both have great loving personalities.

If you are able to give Momma Bear and Little Bear a new home, please complete an adoption application and send it to info@tikihutakitarescue.com.

Mei Mei in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada

Hi my name is Mei. I am a stunningly beautiful, all white, 3-year old, female Jindo who is in need of a new home due to the upcoming arrival of twins in my family. I am not comfortable with children, so sadly I can’t stay with my family anymore. I am a very loving and affectionate dog with my family and people I know an trust. I love to be petted, have my belly rubbed and my head scratched.

I am occasionally fearful of new people and I shy away from strangers who try to touch me. People want to touch me all the time because I am so pretty and have soft silky white fur. I do, however, make exceptions to strangers who have treats. I warm up to them really fast. I have nipped a couple of people who scared me by grabbing me when I wasn’t expecting them too. But I am not trying to hurt anyone, just letting them know they have scared me.

I am great with other dogs at off leash dog parks and at doggie daycare, but not so good when meeting dogs on leash. Again, it is all about fear and I may growl at dogs on leash that make me nervous. I am comfortable with children once I get to know them and will play with them and let them walk me, but I am afraid of children I don’t know and will bark at them.

As you can see, I have a few fears so need someone who will help me gain confidence and learn to trust. I am a very well trained dog as I have been through AKC training where I graduated with flying colors. I don’t beg, counter-surf, climb on furniture or damage things when left alone. You couldn’t find a more well-mannered dog inside the home. I have a strong prey drive which is very typical of my breed so I am not good with cats or small animals. My adoption fee is $300. For  information about Jindos, you can visit www.kang.org/Jindo.html and www.jindoproject.org/.

Turk

Turk is a 4-year old, 80-pound, red and white, long coated Japanese Akita that needs to find a new home that can give him lots of love and attention.

He is currently healthy, up to date on his vaccinations and is house trained. He has been through an obedience training course when he was a puppy, but will need his new family to continue working with him on his doggie manners and obedience skills.

He is very friendly with people that he meets, but has not interacted with young children much and tends to ignore them due to their lack of interest or fear of him due to his size. However, it would be best for him to have a home without young children due to Turk not being fully aware of his size compared to small children.

It would also be good to Turk to be in an Akita-experienced home where he is the only dog as he has been known to react back to other dominant dogs that have challenged him or have attempted to take his food or toys.

He has shared a home with cats for much of his life and he usually defers to the cats that assert themselves. However, with other small animals and cats that he is not familiar with, he does like to chase them and is inquisitive about them.
