WAITING FOR HOMES

Mocha - Adopted!
Mocha is a mellow Akita boy that is estimated to be about 3-years old (the shelter originally estimated him to be older, but we've noticed that he's filling out more and getting bigger lately!). He likes going on walks (he walks very well on lead) and playing with his foster brothers and sisters (www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLgq3C9Kh4U), but he especially loves attention and petting from people!

Mocha has a nice red fur coat and a really full and attractive tail with a tight curl. He even has a twin that is the model for June in the 2014 Akita Calendar!

For more information about Mocha, please complete an adoption application (www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm) and email it to info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Lulu

Meet Lulu! She is a 9-year old Akita looking for a furrever home. Great with people and loves children.

Lulu isn't the best with other dogs and would do best in a single home to be a shining star! If interested in meeting sweet Lulu, stop by SPARC. Her labrador personality will definitely catch your attention!

Please call Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center at 805-525-8609 or info@SantaPaulaARC.org if you would like more information for this beautiful Akita. Lulu's Animal ID is 26984926.

Blanco

Blanco was found walking the streets of Santa Paula in Ventura County, California on April 1, 2015. No one has come to claim Blanco, so he needs to find a loving, forever home!

He originally was suffering from entropian, a medical condition where the edge of the eyelid folds inward, causing discomfort from the eyelashes rubbing against the eye. When Blanco was neutered, his vet also fixed the entropian, so Blanco will soon look beautiful again and he won't be suffering from the pain caused by the condition.

He's now ready to find a new home, but SPARC would really like him to go to an Akita-experienced family.

He's still young and enjoys "play-bowing" with other dogs as he walks by their kennels and shows no issues. He walks well with his kennel person and is always excited to see them and go for his short walks while he's still being cared for in the shelter clinic.

Please call Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center at 805-525-8609 or info@SantaPaulaARC.org if you would like more information for this handsome Akita. Blanco's Animal ID is 25292967.

Moose

Moose is a 1.5-year old, long coated, male Akita that is looking for a new home.

He is a big, playful puppy that is good with people. He would be great in a single dog home as he has had trouble in the past with other dogs, but is fine with the dogs at his current foster home. He knows some commands, but will require continued training and help with learning his doggie manners.

Moose is currently located in Mojave, California.

If you are interested in Moose, please complete an adoption application (click here to download application) and email it to info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Kai - Adopted!

Kai is a 5-month old, male Akita (birthday 10/15/14) who came to us as an owner relinquish. He tends to be a little shy at first but is a real sweetheart once he warms up. He gets along great with other dogs and is a gentleman around cats as well!

He is a pretty mellow guy for a pup, ready to lay down and relax if that's the energy in the house (though he will of course need regular exercise as any puppy does). He is particularly fond of women and bonds quickly. He is a little hesitant with men but this seems to resolve with a bit of bonding time.

Though he was raised with small children and does like them, Kai has personal boundaries that will be difficult for a child to respect. As a precaution, we will not be placing him in a home with children.

Kai will need an Akita-experienced owner with an understanding of proper training methods to continue working with Kai's shy, sensitive personality. Kai will be ready for his forever home after a few weeks of foster care with us, during which he will receive training and socialization. He will be neutered, de-wormed, microchipped and vaccinated before going to a new home. We will be asking a $350 adoption fee to cover a small portion of the expenses associated with his medical and general care.

For more information about Kai and to request an adoption application, please send email to:  arthealinganimals@yahoo.com

Ruby - Adopted!

Ruby is 9-year old Akita Mix that loves people and is friendly to everyone! She is looking for a new home and family because her senior owner had to move to an apartment that doesn't allow large dogs.

She loves to go on long walks and is very good on a leash. She doesn’t like to get wet, so she will stay indoors for up to 48 hours if it’s raining, but thankfully has the strongest bladder muscles ever.

She is very gentle and loves attention. She will play for short periods of time, but is content to rest during the day. She lived with an older, female lab mix for six years and played with a young pit mix for three years.

She loves to be brushed but doesn’t like baths (the water issue). She’s not a barker, will sometimes bark once or twice to come inside if she is out, but will stop at that. She doesn’t typically bark at people coming to the door.

If you are interested in meeting Ruby or able to give her a new home, please email gtinfiniti@yahoo.com

Cocoa and Cutie - Adopted!

These girls are a bonded pair of 4-year old litter mates and as such should be homed together. They are extremely outgoing, social and well-mannered — absolute sweethearts!!!

They are extremely friendly and social. They will give any new human they meet the official, Akita full body wiggle - complete with kisses and goofy, flip-floppy tail wags. They are well mannered with their greetings - no barking or jumping at the door. They are as sweet as you could hope for. They have basic training but need a bit more work on leash walking. Check out the video below for a great example of how quickly they are already learning this behavior with dog trainer Seth Lane!

You can visit this page on youtube to see Cocoa and Cutie in action!:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CaoTYp3ITeU&feature=youtu.be

They do great with handling of any kind, including veterinary treatments and restraint. They do not mind their paws, ears, etc. being messed with. They are very smart and learn extremely fast with proper training.

They have a very high prey drive and have killed small, wild animals. They cannot be homed with cats or small breed dogs, and would probably just do best as the only dogs of the household altogether. However, I do think they could be placed with one neutered male, large breed only, provided that we set up a meeting in a controlled environment first to ensure it's a good fit.

They have some basic training but need more leash training, which we are working on so at least they will have a bit of a start before going to a new home. No small children as a safety precaution (no history of issues but I think it's wise to avoid since they did not grow up around children and I cannot guarantee that they have any training on etiquette around tiny humans).

The adoption fee is $300 each. They are spayed, vaccinated for DHPP and rabies, microchipped, and heartworm negative. They have no health issues and they come from known healthy lines with excellent temperaments.

I have an adoption application and will perform a home check as part of the adoption process. Homes must have yard space and adequate fencing - 6 feet high at the very least with no weak spots or holes.

They must be homed with someone who has experience with this breed (or similar breeds). Adoption will include a transfer session with my husband to relay information on continued training and how best to introduce the girls to their new home. My husband also offers very discounted prices for ongoing training to anyone local. We are located in Santa Rosa, Caifornia.

Ember - Adopted!

Ember is a 20-month old (her BDay is 4/8/13), sable and white, long coated Akita that is healthy, current on her vaccinations and weighs 67 pounds.

She is house and crate trained, knows the commands: "sit", "down", "stay" and "come". Ember love to play ball and be near her humans. She gets along with some other dogs and cats (but will chase cats when they are running outside).

Ember is in need a of new home because the female dog she shares her home with has attacked and fought with her. Ember will need a patient, Akita-experienced owner that can work with her and help her learn that other dogs won't always be aggressive with her.

For more information about Ember, please send email to: info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Milo

I'm not sure how I lost my people but I'm pretty sad about it and still miss them. . .

Even though I'm an older guy, I still deserve a quiet, loving home where I can have a warm, comfy place indoors and someone to give me gentle pets and attention. I like to go for walks and am good on leash, despite my size.

I still have lots of love and companionship to give so can I give it to you?

Milo is estimated to be about 6-years old and is vetted. His Animal ID number is A056325

Bella

Bella is four-years old, up to date on her vaccinations, deworming and flea control. She is house trained and prefers to sleep near you at night. She had originally been given away at a local supermarket by a show-bred Akita's owner. Apparently, their Akita had gotten together with their neighbor's German Shepherd.

She currently shares a home with a male Border Collie who she does well with. She is friendly and happy but definitely an alpha dog that loves attention and car rides.

Bella is looking for a new home without cats, small animals or livestock because she has a strong prey drive for them. She has hasn't been aggressive with other dogs though.

For more information about Bella, please send an email to tiffanyteresi@gmail.com

Tilo - Adopted!

Tilo is an Akita/Golden Retriever Mix in need of a new home. His family is moving to a home that cannot accommodate large dogs and he is ready for a certain person or family that can make use of his intelligence and give him the time and attention that he has been missing.

He is 7-years old, neutered and in good health. He has no history of health issues. He is very intelligent and recently attended training for one of his owners where he demonstrated immediate comprehension and willingness to follow commands once his human learned them. He does not like small dogs. He is cheerful, loving and mellow.

For more information about Tilo or to meet him, please email gary.snider@gmail.com or text 970.683.1449.

Jessie

We currently have an older Akita at our shelter that came to us as a stray. We have no idea why he ended up at the shelter and no one has come looking for him.

He moves a little slower because of some stiffness in his legs and seems to have trouble hearing. He is a real sweetheart and loves people. He loves the kiddie swimming pool and toys!

He is still full of love and would rather be in a warm home than in a shelter setting with noise and hard floors. He loves stuffed animals and will follow you all around the yard. He is looking for a place to spend his remaining golden years.

Bear

We are reaching out today to introduce our big boy, Bear!

This 2 to 3-year old, 80-pound Akita Mix was found lying on the side of a country road in very poor condition. An amazingly generous woman picked him up and brought him to our shelter. She paid to have Bear neutered as well as for as an additional surgery to correct his entropic eyes. Bear has been recovering well and is doing great!

Here at Shafter Shelter we do our very best to temperament test each of the animals that comes through our doors. Bear has passed all aspects of the Safer Testing that is administered with the exception of the dog-to-dog test. Being an Akita, Bear naturally has an extremely high prey drive. Akita’s are known to chase; especially small animals.

They are also known to be one-dog homes. It appears to us that Bear was very well socialized while growing up as he has no problem making friends with strangers. We believe Bear would do great in a home where he is the only dog and with an owner who is familiar with his breed.

Bear has been observed to want to take extreme interest in small dogs and has gently mouthed a poodle mix he was introduced to by a potential adopter. Because of this, Bear is not adoptable by Shafter Animal Shelter standards.

We truly believe the right family for this sweet dog is out there somewhere and we are hoping by sharing his story that they may be found! This giant loves to be petted, play with toys and go for walks. He does well on a leash but does needs a strong handler.

Please forward and share Bear so that he may have a chance at a new beginning! Thank you all!

Buddy

Buddy is a 1.5-year old, brown and white Akita Mix that has been at the shelter since May 15th.

Is there anyway you can go get him. He is a love. A stray that almost got hit by a car. We tried for two months to find his owners or a foster to no avail. My daughter is very ill and in kidney failure and we couldn't keep him any longer. Can you please help him? Thank you kindly.

Buddy's Animal ID# at the shelter is A448084.

Victor

Hi There,

We have a 2-year old male Akita who came to our shelter as a stray.

Victor has a wonderful temperament; gets along very well with other dogs and should be fine with kids when supervised. I wouldn't, however, put him in a home with cats. He does have a bit of a prey drive (typical Akita, I know.)

Victor's Animal ID number is A515808 and he is located in Kennel K729.

Thanks so much!
