WAITING FOR HOMES

Mocha - Adopted!
Mocha is a mellow Akita boy that is estimated to be about 3-years old (the shelter originally estimated him to be older, but we've noticed that he's filling out more and getting bigger lately!). He likes going on walks (he walks very well on lead) and playing with his foster brothers and sisters (www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLgq3C9Kh4U), but he especially loves attention and petting from people!

Mocha has a nice red fur coat and a really full and attractive tail with a tight curl. He even has a twin that is the model for June in the 2014 Akita Calendar!

For more information about Mocha, please complete an adoption application (www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm) and email it to info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Sammi

Sammi is an 11-month old, purebred, female, American Akita puppy. She is a beautiful brindle color of blonde and gray with a dark brown base. Her full name is Sammi, but she also goes by Samyoncé or just Yoncé because she walks like she is in high heels.

We want to find her a new home because she does not get along with our current mix of dogs and we believe that she would be better as the only dog in a family.

She has been spayed and current on all of shots. She is also very healthy and active. She loves long walks and short runs. The only medication she takes is glucosamine/cosequin since she is a large breed and a multi-vitamin.

She is an indoor Akita, house trained, and tattooed from her spay procedure.

She has obedience training and knows the basic commands; sit, stay, down, heel.

She has not been around any children, but is good with the adults that she has met. The only thing that she does, is she loves to nip as a greeting or she'll take your hand in her mouth and lead you where she wants you to go.

She loves toys, especially bears, pigs and skunk-shaped toys. She is friendly, playful, incredibly affectionate and loves her belly rubs. She is incredibly loyal, and wants to be with the family all the time. Loves everybody and wants to be the center of attention.

For more information about Sammi, please send email to:  aratto15@yahoo.com

Ocho

Introducing Ocho! He’s street but he’s sweet and he needs a home!

I met Ocho in a school parking lot where he was drinking from an opened carton of kids’ lunch milk. He was starving, mangy, and not neutered. But he could still turn on the charm!

I called him Ocho because I decided to trust him loose in the car for the 8 minutes it would take to get to my exit. He snuggled in my lap all the way to the vet. Ten days later, his mange is almost gone, he’s neutered and he’s on the road to recovering from months of malnutrition. Little Ocho is FIV+, a very manageable condition. Get the facts about FIV at http://bestfriends.org/resources/fiv-cats-faqs

Ocho has great teeth which means he is likely a young cat, and can live a long, healthy life. He just needs to be an indoor cat and perhaps an only cat, to minimize the risk of spreading FIV (FIV can’t be spread to humans or other species, just cats.).

My wonderful vet clinic will keep Ocho a few more days, until his mange is gone. Then he really needs somewhere to go! He’s getting a bit feisty and restless after a week and a half in the isolation room. But he’s still making friends at the clinic, where the techs wrote “Sweetie pie” on his chart.

Please contact Sandra at alaraca@mac.com if you are interested in adopting Ocho.

Thank you for reading about him!

Nikita - Adopted!

Nikita is a beautiful, 3-year old Akita that is looking for a new home because her family has to move.

She is a house trained, indoor and outdoor dog that loves people and has been great with dogs that are able to get along with other dogs. She has shown some slight aggression with other dogs over new possessions; she'll give them a warning that she is not happy and if the other dog ignores her, she'll show aggression.

She's a great dog. She needs a busy home, whether that be from lots of people or other dogs. She'll love her family endlessly but is generally uninterested in people outside of the house; she enjoys meeting new people, but she'd rather sniff the bushes while out on walks.

Nikita will need to live at a securely fenced home as she can be an escape artist but she won't leave the immediate vicinity and will wander back on her own. She knows how to sit, shake, and lay down. She doesn't like to play fetch but when she's bored of playing by herself she'll bring you her ball sometimes.

She needs a walk or some form of new stimulant daily for at least 30 minutes. I can't place any more emphasis on how much she loves her family though. She needs to be in the same room as her owner when they're home. She is the biggest sweetheart!

Nala in Fredericksburg, Virginia

Hi there! Nice to meet you, I'm Nala, I'm a friendly but independent girl looking for my forever home.

It would be best if I went home with an active family who has experience with dogs. I'm very sweet, but I need more training on sharing food as I really don't like to be disturbed while I'm eating, which is why I'd love to live with older children who will understand my dominant personality.

I also need a home without cats! I'm not just a pretty face, y'know. . .
I also know sit, down and paw! I absolutely love milk bones too! Tugging on rope toys and playing fetch with any type of ball is my favorite!

Please, come into the shelter today, ask to meet me and I'll do my best to make you fall in love with me!

Noire

Update
Noire is now 100 pounds, his fungus is gone, his hair is back and he gets along with just about every dog he meets. He is very loving and just wants to hang out with his pack.

He is currently in San Jose. Folks interested in seeing him may meet him during the holidays!

Everyone who sees him mentions that:
A) he is very handsome and B) He looks like a Dog in a Cow Pattern Coat!

________________________________________________________________________

Noire is an approximately 5-year old Akita that was found wandering near a hospital. He’s a big boy, down to about 79-pounds and needs to gain back about 15 to 20 pounds. His coat is now recovering from the awful shape it was in (it looked like birds had nested in him).

So here is Noire’s story. He was born about 5 years ago and for the first year or so, he was loved. You can tell because he does not hate humans. He had some one giving him love and attention. His teeth are solid and clean — perhaps the only part of him that was.

So what happened after that? Someone who barely paid attention to him got a hold of him. His nails were so long, they looked like shark teeth. He was left outside. We know this because he has fly strikes all over his ears. He had fleas — we know this because about a quarter of his hair towards the rear is gone. I know at some point, someone stopped caring for him at all. His ears were so full of puss and waste that he is surely deaf in his left ear. He can still hear with his right ear.

I know he still loves people, even though it takes some time for him to warm up. Some people hurt him before in his life. When I go to pet his head, he winces, like I am going to smack him.

He is friendly with other dogs and wants to play. His teeth are in great shape and he is now clean and receiving needed medical treatment.

The original plan was to send him south to a sanctuary, but the sanctuary had 3 Akitas in really bad shape show up unexpectedly.

If you have the ability and room to be a foster home for this boy or are able to give him a new home, please send email to:  BAMShibaRescue@gmail.com

Kiku - Santa Rosa, California

Kiku is a lover! She is a 10-year old female Akita. She has lived with the same owner her entire life, but her owner's health problems are preventing her owner from caring for her any longer.

She is a sweet, soft mouthed girl who loves to play fetch with her squeaky toys. Great around people,
but needs to be in an only dog home. Loves walks and car rides. Very well behaved, calm and relaxed around the house.

For more information about Kiku or if you can give her a new home, please send email to:  arianesmith47@gmail.com

Niko - Gold Beach, Oregon

Meet Niko, a 5-year old, male, shepherd/husky/something mix! Niko is a big boy at 95lbs, but he has so much love to give to his new family. Niko loves to play fetch and will play all day long if you let him, so he would prefer a home with a nice yard for him to run and play in. After he is done playing, he loves nothing more than to just hang out and laze in the sun.

Niko does great with dogs around his size, but he really does not like small animals, so a home without small dogs or cats would be great for him. Come and meet this awesome dude and see how much lovin’ you can squeeze into 95lbs!

Blanco

Blanco was found walking the streets of Santa Paula in Ventura County, California on April 1, 2015. No one has come to claim Blanco, so he needs to find a loving, forever home!

He originally was suffering from entropian, a medical condition where the edge of the eyelid folds inward, causing discomfort from the eyelashes rubbing against the eye. When Blanco was neutered, his vet also fixed the entropian, so Blanco will soon look beautiful again and he won't be suffering from the pain caused by the condition.

He's now ready to find a new home, but SPARC would really like him to go to an Akita-experienced family.

He's still young and enjoys "play-bowing" with other dogs as he walks by their kennels and shows no issues. He walks well with his kennel person and is always excited to see them and go for his short walks while he's still being cared for in the shelter clinic.

Please call Santa Paula Animal Rescue Center at 805-525-8609 or info@SantaPaulaARC.org if you would like more information for this handsome Akita. Blanco's Animal ID is 25292967.

Bella

Bella is four-years old, up to date on her vaccinations, deworming and flea control. She is house trained and prefers to sleep near you at night. She had originally been given away at a local supermarket by a show-bred Akita's owner. Apparently, their Akita had gotten together with their neighbor's German Shepherd.

She currently shares a home with a male Border Collie who she does well with. She is friendly and happy but definitely an alpha dog that loves attention and car rides.

Bella is looking for a new home without cats, small animals or livestock because she has a strong prey drive for them. She has hasn't been aggressive with other dogs though.

For more information about Bella, please send an email to tiffanyteresi@gmail.com

Jessie

We currently have an older Akita at our shelter that came to us as a stray. We have no idea why he ended up at the shelter and no one has come looking for him.

He moves a little slower because of some stiffness in his legs and seems to have trouble hearing. He is a real sweetheart and loves people. He loves the kiddie swimming pool and toys!

He is still full of love and would rather be in a warm home than in a shelter setting with noise and hard floors. He loves stuffed animals and will follow you all around the yard. He is looking for a place to spend his remaining golden years.

Bear

We are reaching out today to introduce our big boy, Bear!

This 2 to 3-year old, 80-pound Akita Mix was found lying on the side of a country road in very poor condition. An amazingly generous woman picked him up and brought him to our shelter. She paid to have Bear neutered as well as for as an additional surgery to correct his entropic eyes. Bear has been recovering well and is doing great!

Here at Shafter Shelter we do our very best to temperament test each of the animals that comes through our doors. Bear has passed all aspects of the Safer Testing that is administered with the exception of the dog-to-dog test. Being an Akita, Bear naturally has an extremely high prey drive. Akita’s are known to chase; especially small animals.

They are also known to be one-dog homes. It appears to us that Bear was very well socialized while growing up as he has no problem making friends with strangers. We believe Bear would do great in a home where he is the only dog and with an owner who is familiar with his breed.

Bear has been observed to want to take extreme interest in small dogs and has gently mouthed a poodle mix he was introduced to by a potential adopter. Because of this, Bear is not adoptable by Shafter Animal Shelter standards.

We truly believe the right family for this sweet dog is out there somewhere and we are hoping by sharing his story that they may be found! This giant loves to be petted, play with toys and go for walks. He does well on a leash but does needs a strong handler.

Please forward and share Bear so that he may have a chance at a new beginning! Thank you all!
