WAITING FOR HOMES

Mocha

Mocha is a mellow Akita boy that is estimated to be about 2-years old (the shelter originally estimated him to be older, but we've noticed that he's filling out more and getting bigger lately!). He likes going on walks (he walks very well on lead) and playing with his foster brothers and sisters (www.youtube.com/watch?v=QLgq3C9Kh4U), but he especially loves attention and petting from people!

Mocha has a nice red fur coat and a really full and attractive tail with a tight curl. He even has a twin that is the model for June in this year's Akita Calendar!

For more information about Mocha, please complete an adoption application (www.tikihutakitarescue.com/adopting.cfm) and email it to info@tikihutakitarescue.com

Kuma in South Lake Tahoe
Hello, I have a great 2-year old, male Akita and I have decided to try to find a good home and owner for him. I am moving from South Lake Tahoe, CA to San Luis Obispo, CA sometime this summer. I feel that it will be challenging to take him with me because of finding a house to rent as well as the fact that I will be very busy adjusting to a new career and new environment.

Also, he seems to display some of the characteristics common with the breed in terms of being a little dog obsessed which can lead to aggressive dominant behavior. I think the San Luis Obispo area will be challenging for me and him because people are intimidated by large breed dogs there and I foresee problems and conflict in managing him in that environment.

His name is Kuma. Here are are his good as well as his more challenging behavior characteristics:

Positive Characteristics

Extremely great with all people (young, old, male and female)

Very playful and energetic

Very friendly

Well trained in most areas including completely house trained, non-destructive, sit, stay, heal. Great on a leash.

Very mellow in the house

Plays well with most other larger dogs but can play a little too rough which can escalate into fighting.

Neutered

Current on all shots, heart worm meds, etc.

Licensed

He is pure Akita but he is not papered.

Challenging Characteristics

His main challenge is that he is a little dog-obsessed. He really just wants to interact and play with other dogs but he is so physical that it can often go wrong. As he is getting older he seems to be displaying a little more dominant behavior where sometimes he will pounce on a dog if it comes up to him. He is not viscious however, meaning he never shows his teeth or immediately wants to attack a dog. He just wants to show dominance sometimes.

He has predator behavior with small animals like squirrels and he will definitely chase and try to catch cats so he will not be good in a home with cats.

He plays well with a couple of large breed dogs. He has a Siberian Husky best friend and they play well but once in a while a short fight can break out when the play gets too aggressive.

He sheds a lot a couple times per year like all Akitas

A little drooly.

Desired Adoption Situation

Rather than list him on Craigslist, I thought if I went through an Akita Rescue I would have a better chance of finding someone with prior Akita experience who can keep him safe and most importantly...happy.

I am only interested in giving him to the right owner. Ideally someone who is familiar with the breed and keep him in an environment where he will not be set up for failure. I have never had professional training with him and that could resolve many of his dog issues. I want him to be in a rural environment like mountains or any place where it won't be too hot and he has the ability to roam and stretch his legs without getting into trouble. Someone with a lot of land around them and a large nice backyard is mandatory.

He would love to live with another dog if the chemistry is right because as I've mentioned he loves the interaction of other dogs.

He really is an incredibly loving dog with a big soft and kind heart. I am just trying to be honest about some of the challenges which is really just his dominance with other dogs and as I mentioned cats are out.

Thanks!

Joe

German Shepherd/Chow/Jindo Girl Mix in South Los Angeles

This girl is SO sweet! She is listed as a chow mix but has no spots on her tongue. She also seems younger than 3-years old and looks healthy. She knows how to sit but really can't contain her excitement at getting some affection. Please continue to network her. Her intake photo does not do her justice - she is darling, medium-sized and so well-behaved.

Bear

We are reaching out today to introduce our big boy, Bear!

This 2 to 3-year old, 80-pound Akita Mix was found lying on the side of a country road in very poor condition. An amazingly generous woman picked him up and brought him to our shelter. She paid to have Bear neutered as well as for as an additional surgery to correct his entropic eyes. Bear has been recovering well and is doing great!

Here at Shafter Shelter we do our very best to temperament test each of the animals that comes through our doors. Bear has passed all aspects of the Safer Testing that is administered with the exception of the dog-to-dog test. Being an Akita, Bear naturally has an extremely high prey drive. Akita’s are known to chase; especially small animals.

They are also known to be one-dog homes. It appears to us that Bear was very well socialized while growing up as he has no problem making friends with strangers. We believe Bear would do great in a home where he is the only dog and with an owner who is familiar with his breed.

Bear has been observed to want to take extreme interest in small dogs and has gently mouthed a poodle mix he was introduced to by a potential adopter. Because of this, Bear is not adoptable by Shafter Animal Shelter standards.

We truly believe the right family for this sweet dog is out there somewhere and we are hoping by sharing his story that they may be found! This giant loves to be petted, play with toys and go for walks. He does well on a leash but does needs a strong handler.

Please forward and share Bear so that he may have a chance at a new beginning! Thank you all!

Buddy

Buddy is a 1.5-year old, brown and white Akita Mix that has been at the shelter since May 15th.

Is there anyway you can go get him. He is a love. A stray that almost got hit by a car. We tried for two months to find his owners or a foster to no avail. My daughter is very ill and in kidney failure and we couldn't keep him any longer. Can you please help him? Thank you kindly.

Buddy's Animal ID# at the shelter is A448084.

Emily in Portland, Oregon

Hello, I am Emily Grey and I look forward to meeting you. I am one of the lucky Akitas who came to OHS with over 100 dogs from a breeding operation.

I am 6-years old and weigh about 84 pounds. My breed is known for its loyalty, courage, protectiveness and love for our people, but I missed out on the opportunity to fully understand and bring out these great qualities in myself with training when I was a puppy. Now I am hoping to catch up!

I already can walk on leash and even relax and give a play bow when I see you (if I've gotten the chance to know you). I think I can really shine in a home environment and I hope I find a patient person or family who will understand where I need to go and will help me get there. With lots of commitment, positive training, kindness and understanding I believe I will become a great Akita dog and the best companion.A training consult is included prior to adoption.

The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip ID, collar and OHS I.D. tag, initial vaccines, courtesy veterinarian exam, 30 days free PetPlan health insurance and plenty of post adoption support!

Declan in Portland, Oregon

Hey! Declan Jones here, I am one of the lucky Akitas who came to OHS with over 100 dogs from a breeding operation.

I am a 5-year old, male Akita that weighs about 65 pounds. If you meet me you will see how I cock my head to the side, give you a curious look, then maybe spin around and buck a little. What I need is a good dose of trust in a loving home as I am very timid of new people, situations and scared in new environments and will need a quiet, low traffic home with adults or perhaps older, calm children.

A fenced yard would be a requirement for me to go home with you. Patience would be good too, since I might make mistakes while I am figuring it all out. I bet with your commitment, kindness and understanding I can become your best friend. A training consult is included with my adoption.

I have a video! Click here to see me!

The adoption fee includes spay/neuter, microchip ID, collar and OHS I.D. tag, initial vaccines, courtesy veterinarian exam, 30 days free PetPlan health insurance and plenty of post adoption support!

Victor

Hi There,

We have a 2-year old male Akita who came to our shelter as a stray.

Victor has a wonderful temperament; gets along very well with other dogs and should be fine with kids when supervised. I wouldn't, however, put him in a home with cats. He does have a bit of a prey drive (typical Akita, I know.)

Victor's Animal ID number is A515808 and he is located in Kennel K729.

Thanks so much!

Richie

Richie and his Labrador Retriever buddy were wandering together until they were brought to the shelter. His Lab friend went to foster care with a Lab Rescue, so Richie is now looking for his own new home.

Richie is an Akita Mix that is approximately a year old and weighs 93 pounds.

The shelter's staff and volunteers have reported that Richie passed his behavioral evaluations, but he can be a little hesitant in new situations. He doesn't have problems with people handling him (touching head to tail and around mouth) and is friendly. He is outgoing with people, walks well on leash and has a gentle mouth with treats.

Richie's Animal ID at the shelter is #
A38988.

Helena

Helena is a spayed female, 3-year old, white Akita mix. Helena came to us as a stray, and it looked like she recently had puppies. She’s been a sweet girl from the start and we quickly discovered that she is deaf. Our staff and volunteers have been training her using hand signals and can get you started with some tips and information on living with and training a deaf dog.

Helena is an adorable character and very animated with her gestures which makes her endearing. With her adoption you will receive a voucher good for a free leash and collar, a bag of premium dog food and a bag of premium dog treats. Helena is available for $25, plus dog license if applicable.

Helena's animal ID at the shelter is A299249.
